C.O.P.S. = Conservative Oversight of Progressive Stupidity
Since the CINOs (conservatives in name only) of the Republican party leadership will not attempt to stop President Obama's liberal leaning, I will post what he is doing for you.
It started with Carter. #HBCU By William Jawando: As I stood watching the Virginia State University drum-line perform in the White House this week (likely the first time an HBCU drum-line has ever performed at the White House), I was reminded of how far we have come as a nation and hopeful about where we are heading.
The nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities have served our nation since 1837. They educated freed slaves, giving them the priceless gift of a mind filled with world’s possibilities. Today, this noble goal of our HBCUs continues as they unveil for their students the world of possibilities for themselves, their communities and our nation.
Guests attending this White House event left with a glow not unlike that of January 20, 2009, but they also left with a resolve to do the work that will be necessary to ensure all students have access to a high quality education and armed with the tools they need to reach for the American Dream.
When the President reflected on some of the legends that have matriculated through HBCU's - Thurgood Marshall, Dr. Martin Luther King, WEB Dubois -I thought about how important and critically necessary these institutions have been to the fabric of our nation. I was reminded of the tremendous legacy of HBCUs and that when we invest in our young people at these schools we are preparing the way for the next King, Marshall, and Dubois.
Often in Washington we get mired in partisan debate and lose track of what's really important. Education. Access to opportunity. A fair and living wage. These are things that matter and can make a difference in the lives of people no matter who they are, what they look like or where they are from. We were reminded of these truly American values this week, and for that I am eternally grateful. Now let's get to work! Source: White House While it is nice people feel a glow not unlike that of January 20, 2009, basically the same executive order was signed by Carter, Reagan, Clinton and Bush.
WIshes away climate skpetics. #globalwarming #globalcooling #iceage From Al Gore's op-ed: It would be an enormous relief if the recent attacks on the science of global warming actually indicated that we do not face an unimaginable calamity requiring large-scale, preventive measures to protect human civilization as we know it.
Of course, we would still need to deal with the national security risks of our growing dependence on a global oil market dominated by dwindling reserves in the most unstable region of the world, and the economic risks of sending hundreds of billions of dollars a year overseas in return for that oil. And we would still trail China in the race to develop smart grids, fast trains, solar power, wind, geothermal and other renewable sources of energy — the most important sources of new jobs in the 21st century.
It is true that the climate panel published a flawed overestimate of the melting rate of debris-covered glaciers in the Himalayas, and used information about the Netherlands provided to it by the government, which was later found to be partly inaccurate. In addition, e-mail messages stolen from the University of East Anglia in Britain showed that scientists besieged by an onslaught of hostile, make-work demands from climate skeptics may not have adequately followed the requirements of the British freedom of information law.
But the scientific enterprise will never be completely free of mistakes. What is important is that the overwhelming consensus on global warming remains unchanged. It is also worth noting that the panel’s scientists — acting in good faith on the best information then available to them — probably underestimated the range of sea-level rise in this century, the speed with which the Arctic ice cap is disappearing and the speed with which some of the large glacial flows in Antarctica and Greenland are melting and racing to the sea Source: NY Times When scientific facts fail, scare people with national security and jobs.
Overwhelming consensus on global warming? On May 16-18, 2010 at the Chicago Marriott Magnificent Mile Hotel, 500+ sceintists from around the world are taking time from their jobs to discuss the junk science that is called global warming.
Also, several scientists are saying the next Ice Age will start in the next 5-15 years.
How green are they? #windfarm #lglobalwarming I have now seen via video the insides of two wind trubines.
This one from FirstWind has good clearance around the turbine so it is fairly easy to clean up oil spills and seems to be well maintianed. Check around 2:20 in the video.
Then you have the “Dirty Jobs” episode with Mike Rowe. (Season 4 Episode 15) Part of recap: The top where the engine is housed is called the nacelle. There is a lot of oil leaking onto this platform. Chuck explains that the fittings and brake calipers will leak a little. They wear out just like the brakes on a car. These brakes keep the nacelle in position in relation to the wind.
If the nacelle has a crack near the blades, the oil can get out and be thrown by the blades onto any food crops that may be around the turbine.
Faith-based initiative = WWII Japanese internment campsMarking the first time in history a presidential administration has met for a policy briefing with the American nontheist community, on February 26 the Secular Coalition for America will engage with White House officials on issues of great concern to the secular movement.
"We cannot accept religious interference in government – whether it's loopholes in child abuse laws for 'faith healing,' or preaching to enlisted members of the military," said U.S. Rep. Pete Stark. "I commend the Secular Coalition for briefing the Obama Administration about these matters of religious freedom."
President Obama was the first U.S. president to acknowledge nonbelievers in an inaugural address, an event which began a constructive and meaningful relationship between the administration and American nontheists. When administration officials meet with the country's national nontheist advocacy organization for this briefing—joined by a group of other nontheists from every corner of the nation and all walks of life—it will be the latest indication that the secular movement is gaining significant momentum, and that secular Americans, numbering in the tens of millions, are a constituency that must be included.
"We are very pleased that the Obama administration is affording us this opportunity to present our positions on issues of high importance, issues of freedom and fairness that affect every American, regardless of belief," said Secular Coalition for America Executive Director Sean Faircloth. "Our Founders knew that there was no place in American government for the privileging of religion, or of one belief over another, and that will be a central theme in our interaction with the White House."
The Secular Coalition for America seeks justice for every citizen, regardless of creed." Source: Secular Coalition for AmericaRep. Stark and other SCA members think: “The faith-based initiative, though not as damaging as other failures in the past such as the Japanese internment camps, is still another example of expedience.”
There is NO separation of church and state/ Our founding father didn’t want one denomination of one religion delcared our National Church. They didn’t want that church to get preference from the government.
Will Obama, Stark and the Socialist Congress of America declare the Secular Coalition for America our official National Church?
Dems couldn’t vote for moment of silence? H. RES. 1119 Whereas, March 26, 2010, is designated as `National Support Our Troops Day': Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That it is the sense of the House of Representatives that all people in the United States should participate in a moment of silence to reflect upon the service and sacrifice of members of the United States Armed Forces both at home and abroad. Source: Thomas LOCWhy would the socialists feel the need to refer a call for a moment of silence to a committee rather than voting for it? Don’t the socialists like the “National Support Our Troops” day?
To be fair to the democrats (maybe), votes are not being done today because everybody went home. On the other hand, this was done yesterday and do you need a quorum to vote on a resolution?
Bipartisan? Heck no!! Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) has a fairly simple message for the group: The summit was a train to nowhere and the Democrats’ bill is a dog. Wait. Those are our metaphors. Roskam had plenty of his own. He compared the bill to something thrown in “the microwave.”
Later he compared it to something drawn on an “Etch A Sketch.” He said the problem with the bill was “the message” not the “messenger.”
Roskam, who worked with President Obama in the Illinois Senate, suggested that the president had not come to Blair House to work out a compromise with the GOP. Instead, Roskam said, the president wanted to know, “What is it going to take for you Republicans to vote for my bill?”
The bill, he said, was like a microwaved dish with “a little salt, a little pepper, with some Republican bread crumbs on top.” But, he said, the bill’s unpopularity with the GOP and the public wasn’t Obama’s fault, that Obama had sold the bill the best he could.
“This is a problem with the message,” he said, “not a problem with the messenger.” His constituents, he said, had turned against the bill the more they heard about it. “They listened and they listened and they listened,” Roskam said. “In my district, they’ve become increasingly disappointed with what they’ve seen come out of this process.”
And in a final piece of performance art, he compared the bill to that childhood staple, the Etch A Sketch, pantomiming twisting the dials as he did so, saying the bill grew worse the more it was drawn. Finally, a little less conversation, a little more action. Source: LA Times Obama doesn’t give a spit about passing a truly bipartisan healthcare bill. The purpose of the meeting was to convince moderate democrats to ram Obamacare down the throats of the unwilling American voters.
Offshore wind farms cost too much to get 1/3 of nation’s power from them. Government plans to generate one third of Britain’s electricity from giant offshore wind parks by 2020 could be scrapped because of the vast costs involved, according to the head of Britain’s biggest utility company, as well as a key investor.
Sam Laidlaw, chief executive of Centrica, the owner of British Gas, said it was unclear whether the scheme to build an estimated 10,000 wind turbines across swaths of the North and Irish seas would ever go ahead.
He said that Centrica, which was awarded one of the nine so-called Round Three development zones last month, would proceed only “if the economic conditions are right”, citing high costs for turbines and other equipment as well as limited government financial support.
Maria McCaffery, chief executive of the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA), said that wind farms would be essential if Britain was to have a chance of meeting its target of generating 30 per cent to 40 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
Mr Laidlaw said that the economics of generating electricity from offshore wind turbines in deep water up to 200 miles offshore remained questionable. He said that greater competition was needed between turbine suppliers, while more Asian manufacturers would need to enter the market to drive down costs.
Citigroup has estimated that the cost of installing one megawatt of offshore wind is about £3.5 million — roughly five times the cost of building a gas-fired power station with the same capacity. Offshore wind farms generate electricity only 40 per cent of the time. Source: London TimesUK offshore wind farm video (BBC)Do you know that wind farms cost five times as much as regular power plants?
UK may scrap their alternative energy plans but that wouldn’t stop Obama. Obama and his fellow socialists like spending money we don’t have.
Political Correctness run amok! A Hertfordshire recruitment agency boss says she was told she could not request "reliable and hard-working" applicants.
Devonwood Recruitment boss Nicole Mamo said the Jobcentre Plus in Thetford, Norfolk, told her such an advert could be "offensive" to unreliable people.
Ms Mamo's company was advertising for a cleaning job at West Suffolk Hospital.
She said that she told a Jobcentre worker that "hard-working and reliable" were essential words for the advert, but received the reply that those words could not be used as they "may discriminate against the unreliable".
"I'm trying to run a respected agency and can't uphold a good reputation with unreliable people", Ms Mamo said.
A spokesman for the Campaign Against Political Correctness said: "This is absolutely ridiculous. If they can't advertise for what they want then the system is broken."
The Equality and Human Rights Commission said that the advert as Ms Mamo worded it was in "no way" a breach of any discrimination law. Source: London TimesSad that you can’t expect workers to be reliable. If somebody sits on their fat behind and not doing their job, should companies be mandated to pay them for NOT doing their jobs?
Which one will kill more americans? Four detainees held at the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba have been transferred to Albania and Spain, according to the US justice department.
Three detainees, originally from North Africa, were sent to Albania.
They were identified as Saleh Bin Hadi Asasi, originally from Tunisia, Sharif Fati Ali al Mishad, an Egyptian national and Abdul Rauf Omar Mohammad Abu al Qusin from Libya.
The fourth man, transferred to Spain, was not identified beyond that he was from the occupied Palestinian territories.
The justice department said on Wednesday that it worked with the governments of Albania and Spain to "ensure the transfers took place under appropriate security measures and consultations".
Barack Obama, the US president, had pledged to close the prison by last month, but 188 people continue to be imprisoned there.
He reiterated his commitment to shut down the prison last month, saying: "We will close Guantanamo prison, which has damaged our national security interests and become a tremendous recruiting tool for al-Qaeda."
But his administration has encountered various legal and political hurdles in trying to close the jail, including finding alternative places to continue holding some of the inmates. Source: Al Jazeera Saleh Bin Hadi Asasi was assigned to a Taliban commander and deployed to Jabul Sabr, a mountain outpost north of Kabul. Sharif Fati Ali al Mishad met, traveled with, and was arrested with a senior al Qaida operative. Abdul Rauf Omar Mohammad Abu al Qusin was arrested with an admitted supporter of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group.
We appease Islamic terrorists. Why not communist governments? H. R. 4645 To remove obstacles to legal sales of United States agricultural commodities to Cuba and to end travel restrictions on all Americans to Cuba. This Act may be cited as the `Travel Restriction Reform and Export Enhancement Act'.
On and after the date of the enactment of this Act, the President may not regulate or prohibit, directly or indirectly, travel to or from Cuba by United States citizens or lawful permanent residents, or any of the transactions incident to such travel; and any regulation in effect on such date of enactment that regulates or prohibits travel to or from Cuba by United States citizens or lawful permanent residents or transactions incident to such travel shall cease to have any force or effect.
Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the President may not restrict direct transfers from a Cuban financial institution to a United States financial institution executed in payment for a product authorized for sale under the Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act of 2000. Source: Thomas LOCOther than aiding a communist socialist government, I did currently question sanctions against Cuba until the story below reminded me nothing has changed except the Obama administration’s love for socialist governments. Cuban security forces rounded up political activists across the island yesterday to prevent protests at the funeral of a leading dissident who died after an 82-day hunger strike.
Raúl Castro, the Cuban President, issued an unprecedented statement expressing regret for the death of a dissident. “Raúl Castro laments the death of Cuban prisoner Orlando Zapata Tamayo, who died after conducting a hunger strike,” he said.
That did not stop the Government cracking down on dissent. Elizardo Sánchez, spokesman for the outlawed Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation, said security forces had detained about 30 activists. “Some have also been held in their houses, without judicial warrant, to prevent people from going to the wake,” he said.
Reaction in the Cuban community in Florida was fierce as exile radio stations ran interviews with Mr Zapata’s mother. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, a Republican Congressman from Florida, who is the nephew of Fidel Castro’s former wife, Mirta DÃaz-Balart, said that Mr Zapata’s “murder by the tyrant Fidel Castro and his cowardly jailers will never be forgotten”. Source: London TimesIn another story, Cuba blamed the death of Orlando Zapata Tamayo on the US and Gitmo.
Obama logo? No Iranian Space Agency? Maybe The Internet is abuzz with comparisons of the "strikingly similar" logos of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and the ubiquitous Obama 2008 campaign.
The Missile Defense Agency, which is part of the Defense Department, now features a circular red, white and blue logo on its Web site that has been characterized in some reports as "scarily" similar to President Obama's former campaign symbol. Others have noted that it has a crescent and star design, evoking a common symbol for Islam.
The logo, which first appeared on the Missile Defense Web site in the fall, was designed by TMP Government, a marketing and communications firm that has managed Web site redesigns and logos for numerous government agencies, including recovery.gov and more than a dozen Defense and intelligence-related sites.
But this particular one has caught the eye of critics of the Obama administration.
"I'm having trouble seeing past the crescent and star in the new logo," one critic posted on WashingtonTimes.com. "Is this our signal to the Muslim world that we're not going to shoot down their missiles?"
Brian Collins, chairman and chief creative officer at COLLINS:, a New York-based design and innovation firm, said both logos use the "same visual language," complete with two circles and three stripes.
"The Obama logo is filled with messages of hope, it's about looking toward an optimistic future," he said. "They've taken those exact elements and they've made them more technical."
Collins said the newer Missile Defense Agency logo simply took on more patriotic colors to convey its message more quickly and simply. But he doesn't think the creative minds at TMP Government had Obama in mind when they produced their governmental branding. Source: Fox NewsThe Huffy Puffy post makes fun of this rightwing “crisis” but they do show a bunch other logos including the basic Muslim star and crescent logo. The Iranian logo above is closest match.
I agree with the Brain Collins comments but more importantly agree with the comment posted on the Washington Times. Will it send the wrong signal to our enemies?
Compete to have President Obama speak at your graduation. The White House and the Department of Education have announced a new Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge and are inviting public schools across the country to compete to have President Obama speak at their graduation. At the beginning of the school year, the President encouraged students across the country to take responsibility for their education, study hard and graduate from high school. The Race to the Top High School Commencement challenge encourages schools to show how they are making great strides on personal responsibility, academic excellence and college readiness.
The application’s four essay questions focus on demonstrating how the school is helping prepare students to meet the President’s 2020 goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. Applications will be judged based on the school’s performance and dedication to providing students an excellent education that will prepare them to graduate ready for college and career choices. Each question must be answered in full to qualify and data that substantiates each answer is strongly encouraged.
Source: White HouseFirst, Obama was going to have a lotto so some beer guzzling Average Joe could sit next to the Queen of England at a state dinner.
Now he is going to raffle off his giving a campaign speech at your son or daughter’s graduation.
Yes, it is nice that Obama in some cases is treating the White House as the people’s house but I don’t think he understand that doesn’t mean inviting the neighbors in for cocktails. It means you don’t treat the presidency and White House as personal property.
Don’t help those that oppose us! H. R. 4636 To prohibit United States assistance to foreign countries that oppose the position of the United States in the United Nations. This Act may be cited as the `United Nations Voting Accountability Act of 2010'.
United Nations Voting Accountability Act - Prohibits U.S. assistance to any country that consistently opposed the U.S. position in the United Nations General Assembly during its most recent session. Authorizes the Secretary of State to exempt a country from such prohibition: (1) if there has been a fundamental change in its government policies; and (2) the Secretary believes that because of such change the country will no longer oppose the U.S. position in the General Assembly. Directs the Secretary to make a certification of each exemption to Congress.
